Northeast Seattle Events: Things to Do in May

Spring is here, the sun is coming out (sort of), and Seattleites are emerging from their homes to celebrate at a variety of outdoor markets and events! This month in Northeast Seattle, you can watch local boats float along the Montlake Cut, eat festival fare and browse vendor booths in the U District, shop around a unique mineral market, or explore fire engines and other fascinating vehicles with the kids.

May 6: Seattle Opening Day
Noon | Montlake Cut

The Seattle Yacht Club presents Opening Day, the city’s popular annual celebration ushering in our local boating season! Whether you’re a spectator or a participant, experience a gush of springtime energy at this landmark seasonal event. The morning and afternoon will include a sailboat race, crew races, and the traditional boat parade. Be there as it all kicks off at high noon with a cannon blast and the ceremonial raising of the Montlake Bridge!

May 20-21: University District Streetfair
10am – 7pm (Saturday), 10am – 6pm (Sunday) | University Way NE

The U District Streetfair symbolizes the beginning of Seattle’s outdoor festival season. Food, drink, and arts and crafts vendors take over a stretch of University Way NE spanning multiple blocks. Nibble your way from booth to booth, enjoy the sounds of local musicians and sights of Seattle performers, and mosey over to the beer garden outside of Big Time Brewery for refreshments top it all off (21+ only in the beer garden!).

May 20-21: Seattle Mineral Market
10am – 6pm | Lake City Community Center

From our own backyard in the Pacific Northwest to continents near and far, minerals, gemstones, and fossils are the Earth’s very own treasures… and they’re all on display at the Seattle Mineral Market! Come peruse stalls filled with all things colorful, sparkling, and awe-inspiring. Purchase special stones and jewelry or simply admire the magnificence. Athena’s Food Truck will also be onsite serving up your favorite Greek grub.

May 21: Touch-A-Truck 2017
10am – 1pm | Magnuson Park

The Junior League of Seattle proudly presents the 7th annual Touch-A-Truck at Magnuson Park! This popular event is fun for the whole family, and kids of all ages will love the opportunity to explore trucks of all sizes and uses, including construction trucks, emergency vehicles (such as real fire engines!), and vintage trucks. The event is free to the public (though donations are encouraged!) and will feature fun activities such as face painting, giveaways, and an ice cream truck.
